Melon Beastars

Melon serves as the primary antagonist for the Love Failure Arc and is portrayed as a "psychopath hybrid" hell bent on destroying society as they know it. He is a leopard-gazelle hybrid raised by his leopard mother in near complete isolation. His character serves as a window into the realities of life as a hybrid in Beastars world.[Side note: the name of the city they live in is quite literally never mentioned, I am just going to use "Beastars world" for ease] Melon is very severely abused on all sides, at school and at home, and this very obviously prevents him from developing as a child his age should. I deeply disagree with the ableism in how he is portrayed but I will say that the author does a decent job at writing a traumatised character. You just have to ignore her calling him crazy the whole time. His primary goal is "awakening carnivores to love" which really just means inciting a cannibalistic riot to demonstrate carnivores' "true natures" and effectively collapse their society.

I will be mostly vague about this as it is full of abuse. If you choose to do your own research, please be aware that he is a CSA victim. In school his peers took advantage of his hybrid status, viewing him as an "herbivore [they] could hurt" while knowing he was carnivore enough to prevent teachers from intervening. When reminescing about his first kills he reveals that his classmates attempted to goad him into suicide [via jumping off the school roof] to "see if [his] leopard genes would kick in" before he fell to the ground. At home he was unable to tell his mother what was going on at school as she kept their home as seperate from the outside world as possible. His mother would make frequent comments alluding to her consumption of his father and how he "reminded [her] of [his] fathers taste"

This, along with [implied] repeated sa, lead Melon to kill his mother with an iron at roughly age 9. [the age isnt really confirmed but I am going to assume it was around the same time as his classmates deaths] It isn't known exactly what happened to him after her death.

It drives me genuinely insane that he says smth along the lines of "i am my mothers son" in regards to how he lied to the police about her death. It's also so fucking insane that he associates love with death and violence and consumption. He makes me feel like a fucking chimp I need him dead. Oh also he still cares for his mother. He calls her "mama" for fucks sake.

The general plot

Melon is first introduced through Yahya tracking him down to put and end to [at least his branch of] the illegal ivory trade. He has been posing as an elephant therapist for an unknown amount of time and has killed an unknown [but not insigificant] number of elephants. Through sheer incompetence on Yahyas part, Melon manages to evade arrest and kill one last elephant. He is tracked down to a nightclub and "arrested" [handcuffed to a table] by Yahya and Legosi. In a moment of stunning intellect, Legosi lets Melon go instead of watching him and gets shot for his troubles. Legosi is in a coma for about a week after this and is just. fine? after a dream/out of body experience involving his mother. Instead of taking the fucking hint and leaving Melon alone, he decides to continue trying to track down him down and gets shot again. [this is shortly after the tattoo scene dizzy emoji] This time, instead of just leaving him for dead Melon gets the shishigumi [this is when its revealed he's their new boss] to tie this motherfucker to a chair and drop him in the ocean. Legosi survives through general plot fuckery again and this is when the Genuine Self Described Supremacist comes into play.

In order to find out Melons "weakness" Legosi and the gang consult an actual fucking supremacist who leads a gang of bats that just. Attack?? Hybrids for funsies. This is somehow not condemned in the story. [Beastars sucks balls] I am mildly fuzzy on what happens next regarding this guy but he is not brought up again. Melon continues ramping up to his final goal [the collapse of society] which is supposed to come to fruition on December 25th, which is the same day a massive territory battle over the Back Alley Market is scheduled. Legosi decides to sign up for this battle [literally just a list of gang names on a white board in the middle of the BAM.] which gives us my favourite scenes in the entire manga [example on the right]. In order to be registered for the fight, they make Legosi take a fucking pop quiz on societal rules/expectations with Melon as his challenger [since I suppose they need at least one leader there]. Legosi ends up passing through a combination of Melon having zero fucking friends and the rope on the pendulum above him breaking prematurely.

One last plot section

Some time passes in which both sides prepare for the showdown, and in one of the worst fucking decisions I have ever seen made in fiction, Melon goes through honest to god twink death overnight. It makes me so goddamn mad, a lot of how scary he is rested directly on how small and frail he looked. Agata directly comments on it in a "Why tf is he so scary, hes half my size" way. I understand that it was meant to show that after a certain age hybrids will develop more of their carnivore parents features but it was bullshit. What do you mean he has a nightmare about his mom and wakes up 60 pounds heavier and 5 inches taller??? Get the fuck OUTTA HERE. This change happens the morning of the big fight [how fortunate.] and while this isn't incredibly important to the general plot it helps put how Melon is feeling the whole time into perspective. One of the first things he does when he gets to the Back Alley Market is go and find the Madaragumi, a gang made of leopards and jaguars, and monologues at one of them about his mother before shooting his arm off to attempt to claw the new spots off of himself. [His claws are still too short and dull to pierce his own skin, and this monologue is when we learn he was assaulted by his mother] He is so very obviously unwell this entire time and it kills me forever and ever. Legosi fights his way through the other gangs, including a gang of komodo dragons and an all vixen gang, before making his way to Melon. The fight doesn't last very long before the power goes out in the BAM and general town, leaving everyone besides carnivores in complete darkness. This was planned by Melon, hoping that the bloodlust whipped up by the fight would push carnivores to start killing and eating the herbivores in the square. Unfortunately for him love and peace won or some bullshit and Yahya and Gosha manage to keep people from dying and get the power back on before taking Melon into custody. The series ends with Melon in a straitjacket in jail and Legosi + Haru living happily ever after.

I have spent so many years of my life thinking about this guy. He is genuinely so important to me and a pillar of my identity and he sucks so so so bad. He is so ill and he just does not know it, he can't let himself genuinely think about it for more than two seconds before putting the mask back on and hiding from it. I find it funny that a lot of his issues with Legosi aren't necessarily because he is opposed to Melons plans [I mean, that is part of it yes] but it's more that Legosi has the audacity to think he can fix him. Legosi projects so heavily onto Melon in their first few meetings, directly acknowledging to himself that he sees his future children and their struggles in Melon and he really wants to help with that. And NOTHING is more insulting to Melon than that. There is nothing wrong with him until it's time to hate himself and then he flip flops between blaming his herbivore and carnivore sides.

Even when he speaks about his childhood you can tell he's not fully telling the truth, or he at least can't remember all of it. To a trauma survivor [me] it reads as if he remembers it on a technicality but can't push for any more details without coming up to a wall. Or worse, triggering something. This is most apparent with how he talks about his mom, he seems to switch between the hatred that pushed him to kill her and genuine affection. Like he can't reconcile his actions and how he feels with what she actually did to him. And even saying he hated her when he killed her is a stretch imo. I can see a lot of myself and my friends reflected in some of his more genuine mannerisms and it's almost painful to read. It's always the psychopath stereotypes that grip you the hardest 💀
